Organization is the heart of this blog, but I also have a passion for sharing home improvement, repair and cleaning tips. Funny enough, many of my cleaning tips are the blog posts that have gone viral….not the organizing posts. But no matter what the topic I’m chattering about, my goal is always to help you do it yourself…and on a budget. If you’ve ever had a sink or shower drain clog yet don’t want to shell out big bucks to call in a plumber, I have the perfect solution. And it costs less than $6!
Seriously.
No, I don’t like to call out a plumber. And it’s for the same reasons you likely don’t. They cost a lot of money and it’s hard to find someone reliable. Lately, when I have a plumbing need I call my handyman. On the occasion he’s here (maybe 2x a year) I add little plumbing projects to the list if they are lingering. He works by the hour so I try to make the most of his time. My bathroom sink drain has been clogged for longer than I care to admit. I was putting it off because I didn’t have anything else for my handyman to do, didn’t want to pay for an hour of his time and honestly…it wasn’t really that bad and wanted to try fixing it on my own.
The clog started slow, but over the last few weeks anytime I turned on the water, the sink bowl immediately started to fill…
It was to the point where I had to wash my face quickly otherwise the sink would nearly fill all the way before I was done. So last week I headed out to my local hardware store and found this $6 gem…
Nope, not getting paid to talk about this product – guys. This is a legit find that works!
It’s a thin, plastic, cleaning tool that goes deep into the drain to remove clogs. Seemed too good to be true, but for $6 it was a worth a shot!
I knew my sink issue involved hair. I’m a girl with long hair and my daughter uses this sink a lot too. The teeth on the tool are what grabs the hair clog…and without chemicals, which I appreciated. To start, I removed the sink plug and then gently pushed the tool down the drain. It’s long enough to make it all the way down. You don’t need to remove your sink plug, but if you know how it would help cut down your time…
I was cringing when I pulled it back out because I could feel it grabbing onto hair as it went down the drain. Gross, I know…but this is reality, my friends. I won’t share the initial clump I pulled up (it was significant), but here’s a look at the second go round…
Really disgusting, but wanted you to see how well this gadget works.
Most importantly, my sink drain is better than new. I used the tool about 5 times to be sure everything was out and then thoroughly cleaned my sink.
The sink drained immediately and I’ve had no issues since. This was one of the projects that not only worked and took very little time, it saved me a plumbers bill! I also used it in the master shower to remove a sizable clump of hair. The drain wasn’t clogged, but I can see this being a great cleaning chore to add to a bi-annual home maintenance list. I’m going to clean the kid’s showers and drains this coming weekend too!
If you have a clogged drain, I hope you’ll try this method before contacting a plumber. It works!
