Got weeds? Who doesn’t? It seems like all year long we’re battling with a different kind of weed around our house. We’re also growing an especially fine crop of them in the lot behind our studio! I decided it was finally time to take action, so I pulled out my trusty bottle of weed-killer… a spray bottle I filled with plain ol’ white vinegar!

White vinegar actually makes a powerful all-natural herbicide. (But it can’t tell the difference between weeds and other plant life, so be careful not to accidentally splash it on any plants you want to keep around!) Adding a small amount of dish soap to the mix helps the vinegar stick to your weeds, rather than drip right off. And that’s really all there is to it!
Super Easy 2-Ingredient Weed Killing Spray
Directions:
Add your desired amount of white vinegar to a spray bottle, along with 1 teaspoon of dish soap.
Stir the mixture gently. Take your homemade weed killer outside, take aim, and spray!
Here’s a “before and after” to demonstrate just how effectively this DIY weed killer works! I sprayed this dandelion first thing this morning. (This spray will work best on a sunny, dry day. It won’t work as well on a cool, cloudy or wet day.) And the second photo is what the weed looked like after several hours in the sun. Can’t argue with results like that!
How It Works
If you’re like me and like to know how things work, here’s a little gardening lesson. The acetic acid in the vinegar does two things: it burns the weed on contact, and it lowers the pH of the soil (at least temporarily,) making it hard for the weed to make a comeback. Double-whammy!

Some weeds are more persistent than others, and may need to be treated more than once to eliminate completely. But so far a one-time application has been all I’ve needed to get rid of even the most obnoxious weeds! (Yeah, I’m talking about you dandelions!)
